Fatal crash involving a box truck and semi closes northbound I-435 in Kansas City

Police reopened northbound Interstate 435 on Kansas City’s east side Friday after a fatal collision involving a box truck and a semitractor-trailer, according to officials.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. along northbound I-435 just past Front Street. The collision occurred where traffic shifts in a construction zone for the rehabilitation project of the I-435 bridge over the Missouri River.

Crash investigators determined that the semi was slowly traveling northbound through the active work zone where the lanes were reduced when it was rear-ended by a GMC box truck, police said.

The driver of the box truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi’s driver was not injured, according to police.

Traffic quickly backed up along I-435 in the area and drivers were being forced to exit at Front Street. The highway was closed for about two hours while police investigated the wreck and cleared debris.
