Two Kansas City, Kansas police officers involved in shooting leaving suspect injured

Two Kansas City, Kansas police officers were involved in a shooting Monday morning that left one suspect wounded.

Around 7:40 a.m., the officers were patrolling the 600 block of South 71st Terrace, near Terrace Pointe Apartments. Upon arrival, officers found an unoccupied vehicle that was confirmed to be stolen in the city of Leavenworth, police said.

While investigating the vehicle, a tenant of the apartment complex approached the officers and informed them of an alleged armed disturbance, according to a news release. A suspect, a male in his 30s, then got in the stolen vehicle and attempted to flee the area, officers said.

One officer deployed a taser, which was ineffective. Then the suspect allegedly drove toward one of the officers, according to the release.

Both officers then discharged their weapons, police said. The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled to an apartment building. Officers then successfully deployed a taser and arrested the suspect, according to the release.

Officers were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The suspect, who has not been identified, was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Police did not release information on his condition.

The two officers, who have also not been identified, were placed on routine administrative leave, said Officer Dustin Dierenfeldt.

The Topeka Police Department is assisting with the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
