Kansas City man faces first-degree murder charge after woman fatally shot in 2019

A Kansas City man was charged with first-degree murder Thursday after prosecutors say he fatally shot a woman last year after threatening her over text messages.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office has also charged Michael D. Garrett, 32, with endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of armed criminal action in connection to the Aug. 19, 2019, shooting death of 28-year-old Sandrina Khan.

According to charging documents, Kansas City police were called to investigate the shooting just after 4 p.m. at a home in the 5200 block of Sycamore Avenue. Khan was found on the front stoop of the house suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The glass front door had been shattered by gunfire. A child was found moving around the living room but was not reported to be injured.

Khan was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

During the investigation, witnesses told police they heard Khan arguing with a man, who was described as wearing blue “hospital” gloves. At least two witnesses said they heard five to six gunshots and saw the man leave in a vehicle.

Khan’s mother told police her daughter had a full order of protection against Garrett, who was seen days before the shooting driving a car similar to the one that had left the scene, according to court records. The mother stated Garrett argued with the victim over a child they shared.

Police obtained text messages between Khan and Garrett sent days before the shooting. The messages included Garrett stating “I’m kill both y’all,” “Can’t wait to you die say I did that,” and “I’m gonna over kill you.”

Court records note Garrett has been involved previously in multiple incidents of domestic violence.

Garrett was taken into custody at his Kansas City home on Wednesday. In an interview with police, he allegedly acknowledged owning a car seen on the day of the homicide and acknowledged text messages sent between him and the victim. He then requested a lawyer.

Garrett remains in the Jackson County jail with bond set at $200,000 cash. An attorney for Garrett has not yet been listed in public records.
