Double homicide investigated in Kansas City after two men are shot inside home

Two men were shot and killed late Tuesday in a Kansas City home, police said.

Gunshots were reported to police about 10:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Elmwood Avenue, Kansas City Police spokesman Sgt. Jacob Becchina said in an email.

When officers arrived at the scene, just south of Independence Avenue, several people outside pointed officers inside a residence where they said people needed help, Becchina said.

Two men with gunshot wounds were found inside the home, he said. Both were declared dead at the scene.

No suspect information was available in the hours immediately following the shooting.

Wednesday morning, Mayor Quinton Lucas posted a message on Twitter about the killings.

“Two more Kansas Citians lost their lives to violence overnight, surpassing the horrific number of murders by this point in 2019,” Lucas wrote. “Per City Council recommendation and because it’s absolutely essential now, I will be announcing members of our City’s Public Safety Study Group today.”

The victims Tuesday night were the 63rd and 64th homicide victims in Kansas City this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes police shootings.

At this time in 2019, Kansas City recorded its 49th homicide.

An award up to $25,000 is available for information leading to an arrest in this case, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help. To contribute, visit Report for America online at reportforamerica.org.
