Woman found shot inside car Sunday morning in Kansas City

Update: Video from a home security camera captured the sound of about a dozen gunshots before the victim was found shot nearby. That story, and the recording, is posted here.

A woman found shot inside a car Sunday morning in Kansas City was taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to police.

Officers called to the scene of a shooting about 5 a.m. in the 8000 block of Michigan Avenue found the woman inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Later in the morning, a maze of crime scene tape spanned the block between East 80th and East 81st streets.

Some neighbors poked their heads out of their front doors, still in pajamas. Cars slowed as they passed, their drivers craning their necks for a better look at the flashing lights.

Chuck Baker, 66, lives a couple doors down from where the woman was shot. He said he woke up around 4:50 a.m. to what sounded like someone rapping loudly on his door. But no one was there.

He checked his home security cameras, replaying the video. At the time of the shooting, about a dozen loud pops could be heard, then a car without its lights on drove past his house.

The video showed the same car had circled past a couple of times before the gunshots were heard, he said.

“This street is usually pretty quiet,” Baker said, adding that most of the shootings he knows about happen on the other side of the Paseo.

A tow truck took the car away around 9:15 as officers worked the crime scene. One held an umbrella up in the drizzle.
