Pedestrian struck twice in Kansas City; one driver stops, checks damage, drives away

Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver after a pedestrian was struck twice and critically injured in northeast Kansas City late Thursday, police said.

Officers responded shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday on reports of a pedestrian struck by two vehicles near Independence and Oakley avenues.

The crash occurred as a silver Volkswagen Beetle was headed west on Independence and ran over a pedestrian, Kansas City police said in an email

The Volkswagen continued west and stopped in a parking lot, where the driver got out and looked at the front of the car, police said. The driver then got back in and drove away north on Oakley.

Shortly thereafter, a gold Honda CR-V also headed west on Independence ran over and dragged the pedestrian under the SUV for a short distance.

The pedestrian was rushed to an area hospital with critical injuries, police said. The second driver was not injured.

No suspect information was available on the driver who fled the area area the crash.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run crash is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
