Kansas City man charged with murder after wife found shot to death at home

A Kansas City man has been charged with murder after his wife was found shot to death late Sunday night.

Jackson County prosecutors have charged Carlos Velazquez, 34, with second-degree murder and armed criminal action after 35-year-old Anna Velazquez was found with multiple gunshot wounds in their upstairs bedroom.

According to charging documents, Kansas City police were called just after 10 p.m. Sunday to the 3700 block of East Seventh Street to investigate a report of a shooting. Officers found the body of Anna Velazquez and multiple 9 mm shell casings inside and outside the room. A 9mm Glock 17 handgun was found in the front yard.

Two children were found uninjured in a separate bedroom in the home.

Carlos Velazquez’s father, who lives nearby, said he heard several gunshots around 9:30 p.m. and then heard his son banging on his front door. He said Carlos Velazquez was crying, telling his father he had just killed the victim, court records stated.

Carlos Velazquez was taken into custody that night. He had told police responding to the call, “My wife is dying. It was an accident,” court records stated. He later told police he didn’t recall the shooting.

Prosecutors filed charges on Monday.

Carlos Velazquez remains in police custody. Bond for Velazquez has been set at $200,000 cash. His attorney has not yet been listed in online court records.
