Second person charged in Kansas City burglary where man was fatally shot
A second person has been arrested and charged in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred inside a Kansas City apartment during an attempted burglary earlier this month.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office charged George Steen, 21, with second-degree murder, burglary and armed criminal action after the April 5 shooting death of 35-year-old Monrico Roseberry.
The killing happened in the 8000 block of Campbell Avenue.
Prosecutors allege that Steen conspired with two other men, including co-defendant Shimari Frierson, to rob his sister of $60,000 she had been awarded in a settlement.
In an interview with police, Steen denied being involved in planning the robbery but stated he told Frierson he knew about the money.
Steen told police he tried to talk Frierson and an unknown friend of Frierson’s out of committing the robbery and warned that his sister’s boyfriend may be there. He said the men threatened to shoot if Steen didn’t go through with their plan.
During the early-morning hours of April 5, the three men went to the apartment, court records state.
The sister told police Steen had contacted her that night, asking for a place to stay. She met him downstairs but said two men pushed past Steen and one held her at gunpoint, ordering her to lead them to the money.
The three men entered the apartment, where prosecutors say Steen’s co-conspirators shot Roseberry.
The shooting was reported just after 1 am. Kansas City police found the deceased victim on a living room sofa with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Steen and Frierson were taken into custody soon after the shooting.
Prosecutors filed charges against Steen on Friday. Bond has been set at $300,000 cash. Online public records do not yet list an attorney for him.
Frierson, 24, was charged earlier this month with second-degree murder, burglary and armed criminal action.
