Armed intruders wearing masks break into Kansas City home, leading to 7-hour standoff
A seven-hour standoff that began when a handful of people wearing masks and armed with guns broke into a Kansas City home ended peacefully early Tuesday with several of them in custody, police said.
The standoff began shortly after 10:15 p.m. Monday when a caller told police dispatchers that there was an armed residential robbery taking place in the 8500 block of Sni a Bar Road on Kansas City’s east side, according to an email from Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman for Kansas City police.
The female caller told dispatchers that she was inside the home as the armed intruders were breaking in. She barricaded herself inside the home and remained in contact with police dispatchers until officers arrived, El-Ashkar said.
When police arrived on the scene, one of the intruders opened the front door and immediately shut it after seeing that police arrived. Officers surrounded the home and attempted to contact the intruders. Police brought in tactical officers and negotiators to get the intruders to surrender, El-Ashkar said.
The standoff came to a end about 5:15 a.m. Four people remained in custody as of Tuesday afternoon, police said. Two others have been released.
