Late-night shooting in Kansas City’s Westport area critically injures victim
Police were investigating an overnight shooting in Westport that critically injured the victim, Kansas City police said.
Officers responded about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday to reports of shots being fired near 40th Street and Pennyslvania Avenue. While officers were searching for a crime scene in the east parking lot Marsh’s Sun Fresh, they heard more gunfire to the south on Pennsylvania, police said.
Officers found the victim lying on the sidewalk in front of the three-story building at 4050 Pennsylvania. Emergency medical crews took the victim to a hospital, where the person was in critical condition.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
The shooting is the latest rash of violence in the entertainment district. Over the weekend, a person pointed a gun at a victim and then fired a single shot into the air following a dispute over a possible non-injury crash.
The aggravated assault came two weeks after a shooting in Westport left one man dead and four other people injured.
Jackson County prosecutors have charged two men — Ernest P. Jones Jr., 23, and Devon L. Carter, 25, both of Kansas City, Kansas — in that shooting, which occurred Feb. 29 at MIll Street near Westport Road.
The shooting, which killed Devin Harris, 17, stemmed from an altercation that occurred earlier that evening during a birthday celebration inside the Throwback nightclub.
