Man sought by police in homicide dies in car crash during chase in Kansas City

A man was killed in a car crash during a police pursuit Thursday afternoon in Kansas City.

The man was being sought by police in connection to a homicide, according to Sgt. Bill Mahoney, an accident investigation supervisor with the Kansas City Police Department.

The incident started just before 1:30 p.m. after police tried to pull over a Chrysler Sebring near East 40th and Olive streets.

According to Mahoney, police tried to box the vehicle in, but the driver rammed a patrol car and took off.

The driver headed south on Cleveland Avenue and lost control near East 46th Terrace, Mahoney said. The car hit a wooden utility pole, went through a wrought iron fence and struck an apartment building at 4710 Cleveland Ave.

The driver was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Police did not immediately release his name, pending family notification.

Police later said in a statement that officers were trying to arrest the driver for a felony warrant. A police spokesman did not yet have specific information on the warrant by the time police released the statement Thursday evening.

A female passenger in the front seat of the vehicle was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The incident remained under investigation.
