Kansas City man accused of fatally shooting another man during argument over woman

A Kansas City man accused of killing another man last fall said the two had been arguing over a woman before he shot the victim on Olive Street, according to charging documents.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office charged Ronnie Steven Grady, 42, with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Michael K. Jones in the 5200 block of Olive Street in Kansas City. Jones, 44, was one of three people killed in separate shootings in the city within five hours Nov. 6.

Just after 3 p.m. that day, Kansas City police were called to investigate after a witness saw a man in a truck shoot Jones, who had been standing by the vehicle window, talking.

The truck left the scene by the time officers arrived. On Olive Street, police found Jones, who had multiple gunshot wounds.

A tip submitted through Kansas City Crime Stoppers said the suspect was Grady and indicated that the victim and suspect were arguing over a woman they had both been involved in a relationship with. The tip also said Grady was known to carry a handgun and drive a truck.

A computer check conducted by police found that Grady operated a green 2001 Ford F-150 truck.

At least two witnesses reported hearing the two men arguing and described seeing a dark-colored vehicle with the driver’s side door ajar. One of the witnesses said he saw the suspect shoot at the victim, who was standing near 53rd and Olive streets. The suspect, he said, then entered the vehicle and drove away.

On Wednesday, police took Grady into custody for questioning.

Grady at first indicated that he had left the area before the shooting took place and did not know what happened to Jones.

Later in the interview, he told police that he and Jones had been arguing over a woman. Grady said the victim was in a relationship with her and later learned that Grady was as well.

Both Grady and the woman, described as Jones’ recent girlfriend, told police Jones was high on PCP on the day of the homicide and acted aggressive in the past.

Grady stated the Jones was being belligerent that day and wouldn’t let him leave in his truck. He allegedly told police he shot Jones in self-defense, stating he was afraid of what the victim was capable of doing.

Grady remained in the Jackson County jail on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say they have requested bond to be set at $250,000 cash.

Public records listing an attorney for Grady were not immediately available Wednesday night.
