Pleasant Hill man accused of fatally shooting wife, held on $500K cash in Cass County

A Pleasant Hill man has been charged with murder in the Saturday fatal shooting of his wife, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

John Bradley Lankford, 56, was charged Sunday with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the killing of 60-year-old Lorie Lankford, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies were called to the shooting about 5:15 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 16000 block of South State Route E in Pleasant Hill, about 40 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City.

Capt. Kevin Tieman said deputies found a man outside and an unresponsive woman in the basement. Lorie Lankford died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

It remained unclear what led up to the shooting. Tieman said it appeared to be “domestic in nature.”

John Lankford remained at the Cass County jail on a $500,000 cash bond.

The killing marked the 28th homicide across the Kansas City metro area this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
