Man pleads guilty to Kansas City shooting that left three dead in November 2017
A man pleaded guilty Thursday to a triple murder at an east Kansas City house.
Deaundre J. Brown, 29, pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of armed criminal action.
A prison sentence of 20 years was recommended for each count, to be served concurrently, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records.
“This was a difficult case and neither the State nor Mr. Brown are completely satisfied with the plea agreement,” said John Picerno, Brown’s defense attorney. “However, ultimately, Mr. Brown believes the agreement is in his best interest.”
On Nov. 10, 2017, Kansas City police responded to the 4900 block of East 17th Street.
Jennifer L. Zimmerman, 30, Victor Portillo, 30, and Yesseria Ahumada, 25, were killed in the shooting.
A witness told police he overheard a conversation between Portillo and Brown about a potential drug deal, with Ahumada setting up the sale, court records said.
Brown was looking to buy 20 pounds of marijuana from Portillo for $34,000, the witness said.
Cellphone records, surveillance video and another witness account allegedly placed Brown and his vehicle in the area before and after the shooting.
