Man charged in 14-year-old’s death in 2019 car crash appears in Johnson County court
An Overland Park man charged with reckless second-degree murder in the April 2019 death of a 14-year-old appeared in court for the first time Thursday.
Sudhir Gandhi, 71, was charged Wednesday in Johnson County District Court.
Gandhi is being held in the Johnson County jail with bond set at $50,000. His request for a modified bond was denied at the hearing Thursday, according to court records.
Gandhi was behind the wheel of a car that drove up onto the sidewalk on Switzer Road near Oxford Middle School and, allegedly traveling at highway speeds, hit 14-year-old Alex Rumple as she walked home from school. She died from her injuries days later.
According to an Overland Park police report, Gandhi told police after the crash that his brakes had failed. He was transported to the hospital because he may have lost consciousness while driving.
Gandhi is set to appear in court again on Jan. 23. His attorney, Keith Drill, did not respond to The Star’s request for comment.
