Man convicted of arson, attempted murder in Overland Park apartment fire

A Johnson County jury on Wednesday convicted a man of starting a fire at an Overland Park apartment complex in 2018.

Ronald Buchanan, 39, was found guilty of three counts of attempted first degree murder, six counts of aggravated arson and one count of animal cruelty according to a news release from Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe.

Buchanan’s charges stemmed from a fire in May 2018 at the Spring Hill Apartments in the 8800 block of West 121st Terrace.

According to prosecutors, the Kansas City man set the fire in an attempt to kill two women who lived in the building.

All occupants of the building escaped. One child was treated for smoke inhalation and a dog died in the fire.

The two-alarm fire burned through the roof of the two-story building and took firefighters over an hour to bring under control.

Buchanan is scheduled to be sentenced at 3 p.m. March 12, according to the release.
