Firefighters see Overland Park apartment fire blocks away, call for second alarm
Firefighters responding to an apartment fire early Monday in Overland Park saw the blaze from blocks away and immediately requested a second alarm.
Crews from Overland Park and Leawood fire departments responded to the blaze just before 4:30 a.m. Monday at the Spring Hill Apartments in the 8800 block of West 121st Terrace.
Arriving firefighters reported that flames had burned through the roof of the two-story building as residents evacuated, according to the Overland Park Fire Department.
While some crews attacked the fire, others searched for any residents remaining inside the apartments.
All of the residents are thought to have escaped. However, one unit has yet to be searched because a collapsed roof has rendered it inaccessible, fire officials said.
One child was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation. The child was said to be in good condition.
It took firefighters more than an hour to bring the fire under control. Crews continue to search for any remaining hot spots and were working to access and search the last apartment. A collapse zone has been established around several parts of the building.
The American Red Cross is assisting 22 residents who were displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
