21-year-old charged in Kansas City shooting that left one dead, baby shot in leg

A 21-year-old has been charged in Wednesday’s double shooting that left one man dead and his baby injured.

Nicholas A. James, of Kansas City, is charged with second-degree murder, assault, armed criminal action and endangering the welfare of a child.

On Wednesday afternoon, officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded to a shooting in the 2000 block of Park Tower Drive.

About the same time that police arrived at the crime scene, a 5-month-old baby who had been shot in the leg arrived at a hospital by private vehicle.

Officers at the shooting scene located DeAndre Chiney, 21, who was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to charging documents, the incident began after Chiney and the mother of the baby had an argument.

James and four others went to Chiney’s to get the baby. James and Chiney “had words at the door of the residence,” the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said.

A witness said she saw James shoot Chiney. James continued to shoot, court documents said, and he went inside the residence and came back out with the baby.

James and two other occupants in the car were dropped off and then others drove the baby to the hospital.

On Thursday, James was arrested. In a police interview, he was told the shooting was captured on surveillance video and confessed to shooting Chiney, charging documents said.

An attorney for James is not yet listed in court records.
