Arrest made in weekend shooting of 19-year-old woman on Main Street in Kansas town
A suspect has been arrested in the fatal shooting Saturday of a 19-year-old woman in Independence, Kansas, according to state law enforcement officials.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in to help investigate after Kimberley D. Meeks, of Coffeyville, was shot and killed while walking along Main Street in Independence. The town, with a population of about 9,483, is about 175 miles southwest of Kansas City.
The shooting was reported about 6:00 p.m. when Meeks and a man were walking near the intersection of Laurel and Main streets at the west end of the city. An unknown person fired gunshots from a car and fled, according to the KBI.
The man who was with Meeks ran, according to the KBI. A resident called 911 to report the gunshots. Meeks was pronounced dead at the scene.
An 18-year-old man was arrested Sunday at his home in Coffeyville, according to the KBI. He was booked into the Montgomery County jail. The Star is not naming the man because charges had not been filed against him Monday.
The investigation continued and the case would be referred to the Montgomery County prosecutor’s office, the KBI said.
The Independence Police Department, the KBI, and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were investigating the homicide.
Anyone with information was asked to call the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME or the Independence Police Department at 620-332-1700. Callers can remain anonymous.
