19-year-old woman shot and killed Saturday on Main Street in Kansas town

State law enforcement officials are investigating a homicide after a 19-year-old woman was shot and killed Saturday in Independence, Kansas.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said it is investigating the killing of Kimberley D. Meeks, of Coffeyville, who was shot while walking along Main Street in Independence. The town, with a population of about 9,483, is about 175 miles southwest of Kansas City.

The shooting was reported about 6:00 p.m. when Meeks and a man were walking near the intersection of Laurel and Main streets at the west end of the city. An unknown person fired gunshots from a car and fled, according to the KBI.

The man who was with Meeks ran, according to the KBI. A resident called 911 to report the gunshots. Meeks was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Independence Police Department requested help from the KBI about a half-hour after the shooting. The KBI, the police department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the homicide.

Anyone with information was asked to call the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME or the Independence Police Department at 620-332-1700. Callers can remain anonymous.
