After arrest in Mexico, KCK mass shooting suspect booked into Wyandotte County jail

A suspect in an October mass shooting at a Kansas City, Kansas, bar has been brought back to the metro area to face four counts of murder after he was arrested last week in Mexico.

Hugo Villanueva-Morales, 30, was booked Saturday night into the Wyandotte County Detention Center, jail records show. He is being held there on a $1 million bond.

Villanueva-Morales was arrested Wednesday by state police in Michoacán in southwest Mexico, according to the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Villanueva-Morales was identified by Kansas City, Kansas, police as one of two suspects in the Oct. 6 shooting that left four people dead and five others wounded at the Tequila KC Bar near 10th Street and Central Avenue. He and another man, Javier Alatorre, 23, have each been charged with four counts of first-degree murder in Wyandotte County District Court.

Alatorre was quickly arrested but Villanueva-Morales vanished from public view. As he fled the area, Villanueva-Morales may have escaped arrest in Dallas by 15 minutes, according to federal court documents charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Those killed in the shooting were Everardo Meza, 29; Alfredo Calderon Jr, 29; Francisco Garcia Anaya, 34; and Martin Rodriguez-Gonzalez, 58.

Villanueva-Morales did not yet have an attorney listed in court records who could be reached for comment.
