School bus struck by bullet Tuesday afternoon near J.C. Harmon High School in KCK
Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools said one of its buses was struck by a bullet Tuesday afternoon in the area of J.C. Harmon High School.
A teacher and a student were on the bus at the time of the incident, the school district said in a statement. Neither were injured.
The incident happened around 2 p.m., before students were scheduled to be dismissed for the day.
Those who were on the bus had heard gunfire and alerted district officials, who dialed 911, said Sharita Hutton, the district’s director of communications.
Hutton said the district already had school resource officers on hand Tuesday but worked with Kansas City, Kansas, police to make sure students were escorted out of the building to be picked up by their parents or their bus.
“We are just so thankful that everybody who was on the bus was safe, and very quickly after being notified of the incident, we immediately took action to make sure that all of those kids who were dismissing just minutes after the incident were also safe,” Hutton said.
The investigation was ongoing late Tuesday afternoon. The district said in a statement that the the shot was reported to be connected to a drive-by shooting. No further information has been released.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.
