One person killed in 5-vehicle wreck on I-35 in Johnson County after semi is disabled

One person was killed in a five-vehicle wreck Tuesday on northbound Interstate 35 in Johnson County, according to authorities.

The crash was reported about 10:40 a.m. near the 67th Street exit in Merriam.

Two people were taken to a hospital with injures that were not considered life-threatening, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Trooper Candice Breshears said a disabled semi-truck was stopped on the left shoulder and slightly in the left lane, but parked as far over on the shoulder as possible.

A white van struck the rear of the truck, causing a chain reaction of collisions.

The northbound lanes of the interstate were closed at 67th, with traffic being diverted off the highway. Traffic was backed up significantly.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., Breshears said the road had reopened.
