Kansas City man charged with murder, robbery after November double shooting

A Kansas City man is facing a slew of felony charges, including murder and robbery, in connection to a shooting that left a woman dead and a man injured last month, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release.

Jonathan D. Campbell, 28, is charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery and three counts of armed criminal action.

Kansas City police were called to investigate the shooting around 7:15 p.m. Nov. 26 in the 3000 block of Cypress Avenue.

Arriving officers found a man outside who was suffering from gunshot injuries to the face. The victim stated “mom was dead” and told officers “Johnny did it” before being taken to a hospital, court records note. Inside the home, police found a woman who had been shot to death. The woman was later identified as 52-year-old Evelyn Frazier.

The girlfriend of the surviving victim told police a man came to the house, where she and her mother live. The witness said the suspect had been looking for her boyfriend. After about 20 minutes, her boyfriend came home, and she heard the suspect return. From another room, she said she heard three gunshots. She said she hid and eventually ran out of the home to call for help.

In an interview with police, the victim said he arrived at the house and locked the front door but the suspect allegedly forced his way into the home and shot him in the face. The victim said he fell to the floor and “played dead” to avoid being shot again.

While on the floor, he said he heard the suspect ask “where” something was and his girlfriend’s mother replied “there is nothing in the house.” He heard two more shots. He said the suspect then took two cellphones, a necklace he was wearing, ransacked the house and left in a black or dark-colored SUV.

The victim told police he recognized the suspect as Campbell, a man he had met previously and has talked to on Facebook, court records stated. The victim and the witness later picked out Campbell in a six-person lineup.

Detectives in an unrelated investigation also associated Campbell to a black Ford Escape, similar to the vehicle the victim described.

Campbell was arrested in connection to the killing as well as an unrelated warrant.

According to court records, Campbell denied being at the Cypress Avenue home on the day of the shooting but later told police he had visited the male victim at the home in the last week. He allegedly told police he heard the male victim had died after a robbery.

He also told police his girlfriend has a black Ford Escape but said he never drives the vehicle unless she is with him.

The prosecutor’s office filed charges against Campbell on Wednesday. He remains in the Jackson County jail.

Public records listing Campbell’s attorney were not immediately available Wednesday night.
