16-year-old charged in burglary that preceded Olathe police shooting of teenager
A 16-year-old has been charged in an alleged burglary that preceded a police shooting Monday in Olathe.
Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said Friday that a 16-year-old has been charged with residential burglary following the incident.
The charge stems from a home burglary in which handguns were stolen. Officers were investigating that burglary Monday morning when they found two people armed with handguns walking in the area, according to Olathe police spokesman Joel Yeldell.
When officers approached the the pair, Yeldell said, the “contact escalated,” and officers fired shots, wounding a 16-year-old boy.
Yeldell did not say what caused the escalation. The teen who was shot was listed in stable condition Monday morning.
It is unclear whether the teen now charged is the boy who was injured or another teen involved in the incident.
Howe did not respond in time for publication to the Star’s request for a case number or name for the 16-year-old.
