Kansas police officer shoots, kills man after chasing him into Missouri
A Pittsburg, Kansas, police officer shot and killed a man Friday after pursuing him across the state line into Missouri, according to state law enforcement officials.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Missouri Highway Patrol are investigating the shooting. The KBI identified the man killed as Jeremy Pelican, 34, of Pittsburg.
The chase began about midnight when an officer with the Pittsburg Police Department tried to pull over a 2007 Toyota Camry near Quincy and Broadway streets. The tag on the car was registered to a different vehicle, according to the KBI.
The KBI said Pelican was driving the car and refused to stop.
The police officer pursued the car into Barton County, Missouri, where the Toyota became disabled near E. 540th Avenue and S. 270th Street.
Pelican was armed with a shotgun when he got out of the Toyota and ran east into a field, according to the KBI. The officer followed Pelican on foot and shot him.
Pelican was taken to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, where he died of his injuries.
No law enforcement officer was injured during the incident, according to the KBI.
The Missouri Highway Patrol will lead the investigation because the shooting occurred in its jurisdiction, the KBI said.
