Child shot during altercation in Independence. Suspect who fled taken into custody

A young child was shot Thursday during an altercation between people in Independence.

The shooting was reported at 2:25 p.m. outside a home in the 2200 block of South Cedar Avenue, the Independence Police Department posted on social media.

The child was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, the department said shortly after 4 p.m. The victim’s age has not been released.

The suspect fled the scene, but was located in Kansas City and taken into custody.

No further details have been released.

Police said the shooting remained under investigation Thursday afternoon.
