Surveillance video, suspect vehicle found in KCK leads to man’s arrest in KC homicide
A 28-year-old Kansas City man has been arrested and charged with murder after police said they located the car and gun allegedly used in the killing of a man outside an apartment complex last month.
Jackson County prosecutors charged Skylar M. Williams with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of 23-year-old Dominique Walker.
Kansas City police found Walker lying in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2100 block of Wheeling Avenue about 8:30 pm. Sept. 27 after receiving a call about a shooting. Police said Walker died from gunshot wounds.
Surveillance video showed at least two suspects arriving at the apartments in a white Mercury Mountaineer. Court records said the video showed the suspects fleeing the scene in the SUV after the shooting. Police located several spent shell casings.
Court records said police retrieved the suspect vehicle’s license plate number from the video and found the car was registered to Williams.
Prior police reports involving Williams showed he had a girlfriend living in a Kansas City, Kan., apartment. Detectives found the Mercury parked near the apartment. Police obtained a search warrant for the apartment and later found eight cellphones and a pistol that allegedly matched the spent shell casings found at the shooting scene, court records said.
Williams was arrested Tuesday in Kansas City, Kansas.
In an interview with police, Williams said he was at the apartments on the night Walker was killed and heard a gun battle. He said he arrived and left the scene alone in his car.
Court records said Williams was “unable to explain” why multiple people were seen in the surveillance video getting into his car and fleeing the scene following the shooting. Williams also told police he couldn’t say who else was involved in the shooting, for fear of retaliation.
Williams remained in custody in Wyandotte County on Wednesday. His bond was set at $250,000 in Jackson County.
