After midday stabbing at park, what’s the state of violent crime in Olathe?
A midday stabbing at a park injured a mom of three children and shocked the Olathe community this month, but crime statistics for Olathe show most violent crimes have dropped in recent years in the city.
Witnesses described the attack at Two Trails Park as a random act of violence that disrupted a warm spring afternoon in a place they find safe and often enjoy.
Officers responded around noon March 19 to the 1000 block of Ridgeview Road on reports of an armed disturbance. Upon arrival, they found a 38-year-old woman suffering a stab wound. The woman, later identified as Jamie Trumpp, was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said in an update that she is expected to survive the attack.
Since the stabbing, a 27-year-old man, Kwan Noble Trezvant, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in Johnson County District Court. A judge recently suspended proceedings while Trezvant undergoes a mental evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial.
Witnesses of the incident described seeing a man act strange before he walked up to Trumpp and stabbed her, according to court documents.
Despite this, neighbors who live in the area said they have never felt unsafe at the park, and crime data generally seems to support the sentiment that Olathe is getting more safe, not less.
