Passengers on an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Kansas City got a scare late Wednesday as the plane experienced an engine fire as it was landing, according to fire department radio traffic.

The plane, a Boeing 737 MAX 9, departed Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at 8:31 p.m. Central Daylight Time and arrived at KCI five minutes ahead of schedule at 11:54 p.m., the FlightAware tracking and data platform showed.

An alert went out over the Kansas City Fire Department channel shortly before midnight, according to audio of radio transmissions captured by Broadcastify.com.

“ARFF-1 (Airport Rescue & Fire Fighting) and companies responding from the station on an Alert 3 to Alaska Airlines,” it said. “This is ARFF-1. Go ahead and have all outside companies respond to Mexico City (Avenue), please.”

Within two minutes: “ARFF-1 and companies on the scene. We have an Alaska Airline plane at the gate. We’re pulling up behind right now. Nothing’s showing. We’ve got police on the scene. We’ll be investigating.”

An update around 12:09 a.m. Thursday said, “We’re on the scene now. They had an engine fire on engine number two. It appears to be out right now. We’re investigating. The pilot did see the flames and evacuated the aircraft. As of right now, the engine is out and everything is under control.”

At 12:12 a.m.: “At this time, everything is under control. Fire is out. You can have all outside companies go in service.”

The incident was closed at 12:21 a.m. Thursday.

“Everything is under control. They’re gonna be checking the plane out. All companies are just gonna be in service and be heading back to the station.”
