Delta flight to Seattle returns to Kansas City after crew declares emergency

An early morning Delta Air Lines flight bound for Seattle (SEA) returned to Kansas City International Airport (MCI) shortly after takeoff Wednesday when an odor was detected on board, a Delta Air Lines spokesperson said.

The Delta Flight 2105 took off around 8:25 a.m. and soon after the flight crew declared an emergency, returning to Kansas City, where the Airbus A220-300 landed safely. The emergency was declared to obtain priority handling from air traffic control, the spokesperson said.

The flight had 87 passengers and five crew members, who deplaned normally.

“After an odor was detected in the flight deck, the flight crew followed established procedures to safely return to Kansas City,” the spokesperson said. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologize for their experience and delay in travel.”

Delta switched to a replacement aircraft that departed for Seattle about 12:45 p.m.
