The 10-year-old boy who died after Kansas City police said he walked away from his Northland home in his sleep early Thursday was a student at Briarcliff Elementary School, a parent-teacher group said.

Police said the boy, Jackson Georgari, was found unresponsive in a pond near the Village at Briarcliff complex, a shopping center south of his home off North Mulberry Drive, and he was declared dead at the scene.

Police said the boy had sleepwalked from his home in the Province of Briarcliff apartment complex in the 1100 block of Northwest Vivion Road early Thursday morning.

“Our Briarcliff family is heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our students, Jackson Georgari,” the Briarcliff PTO said in a social media post Thursday afternoon.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and everyone whose lives were touched by him,” the group said. “During this incredibly difficult time, we ask our community to keep the family in your thoughts while honoring their privacy as they grieve.”

“We know many in our school community will want to help. As the family has an opportunity to process this unimaginable loss, we will share information about ways to support them if and when those details become available.”

The boy’s disappearance set off a search that drew first responders and emergency crews from several local departments Thursday.

Police said there were no immediate signs of foul play in the boy’s death, but said they would investigate.
