Children’s Mercy treated more than a dozen children and teens for firework injuries this Independence Day week, according to the hospital.

From Wednesday, July 1, to Tuesday, July 6, the Kansas City children’s hospital treated 19 patients for firework-related injuries.

Most children received burns and some were injured on their hands or eyes. One individual was admitted to the hospital, and some will need follow up visits.

The patients ranged from 2 to 17 years old. Sparklers, smoke bombs, firecrackers and Roman candles were the firework varieties that caused the most injuries.
