Driver dies after being pinned between two vehicles in crash on I-70
A driver died at a hospital hours after being pinned between two vehicles in a crash early Sunday along westbound Interstate 70 east of downtown Kansas City, a police spokesman said.
Police suspect impairment was a factor in the crash that closed I-70 for hours.
The crash occurred just before 4 a.m. Sunday on I-70 near Prospect Avenue, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino of the Kansas City Police Department.
A preliminary investigation found that the driver of a white Infiniti activated the hazard lights and stepped out of the vehicle after the car became disabled on the right shoulder of the highway.
As the driver was standing near the rear of the car, a silver Ford Five Hundred headed west in the right lane of I-70 entered the emergency shoulder and struck the Infiniti. As a result of the crash, the driver of the Infiniti was pinned between the two vehicles and suffered traumatic injuries.
The victim was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead Sunday evening. The victim’s death is Kansas City’s 38th traffic fatality of the year. The driver of the Five Hundred was also taken to a hospital to be evaluated.
The investigation remains ongoing, and impairment is believed to be a contributing factor, DiMartino said.
Westbound I-70 was closed for more than two hours, the Missouri Department of Transportation shared on social media.
