The Missouri Department of Transportation shared on social media that Interstate 70 was closed Sunday morning because of a crash. July 5, 2026.

Police suspect impairment was a factor in an overnight crash east of downtown Kansas City that closed Interstate 70 for hours.

The crash occurred just before 4 a.m. Sunday on westbound I-70 at Prospect Avenue, according to an incident report shared by Sgt. Phil DiMartino, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

A white Infiniti car had stopped in the shoulder with its hazards blinking, according to the report. The driver of the Infiniti was standing near the back of the vehicle when a Ford sedan veered into the shoulder, DiMartino shared.

The Ford hit the Infiniti, and, according to the report, “the driver of the Infiniti was pinned between the two vehicles and sustained traumatic injuries.”

The Infiniti driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and the Ford driver was hospitalized for evaluation, police shared.

KCPD is investigating the incident and shared initial reports indicate impairment contributed to the crash.

Westbound I-70 was closed for more than two hours, the Missouri Department of Transportation shared on social media.
