Independence man convicted in 2020 fatal shooting after ‘brief altercation’ in bar
An Independence man pleaded guilty Monday to involuntary manslaughter in relation to a fatal shooting six years ago that occurred after an altercation in a bar.
Joshua X. Craig, 24, is scheduled for a sentencing hearing on Aug. 12 in Leavenworth County District Court.
Court records show that the shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 16, 2020. Following a “brief altercation” at a Lansing bar, victim Matthew James Smith left the parking lot in a vehicle, according to a news release by the Leavenworth County Attorney’s office.
Two vehicles pursued Smith, with Craig a passenger in one of them.
“While traveling on Eisenhower Road in Leavenworth, Craig fired a gun in the direction of the victim’s vehicle,” the release said. “The bullet shattered the rear window and struck the victim, resulting in the victim’s death.”
During the investigation, shell casings found at the scene were later compared to a firearm Craig admitted belonged to him, the release said.
“This case reflects a reckless and dangerous decision that resulted in the loss of a loved one and a felony conviction,” Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said. “Our office will continue to hold individuals accountable when their actions endanger the community.”
