A Kansas City, Kansas, man was sentenced to six months in jail after he was convicted of attempted theft stemming from a porch theft of an Amazon package.

Phillip Daniel Pemberton — who entered a no contest please in early April — was sentenced Friday. A no contest plea means the defendant neither admits nor denies charges against them, but still accepts the court’s conviction and sentencing as if they are guilty.

The incident happened on Sept. 26, 2023. A Leavenworth County resident discovered that the package had been stolen from his porch.

“After noticing the delivery was missing, the victim reviewed footage captured by a Ring doorbell camera,” said a Tuesday news release from the Leavenworth County Attorney’s office. “According to investigators, the video showed a man approaching the residence and taking a package containing approximately $10 worth of costume jewelry, along with a child’s folding chair, before leaving the area.”

The victim called the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office. After reviewing the footage, the sheriff’s office worked with the Leavenworth Police Department and the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department to identify Pemberton.

Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson applauded the collaborative work of the three agencies.

“Their coordination and diligence allowed this defendant to be identified and held accountable.” Thompson said. “ … While the value of the stolen items may appear small, porch thefts create frustration and a sense of violation for victims in their own neighborhoods.“
