Dads, what’s the best Father's Day gift you’ve received? Whatever it is, it might be hard to top what one Missouri lottery winner in Kansas City just got.

On June 26, Missouri Lottery announced that a lottery player won a $100,000 prize on a “Money” Scratchers ticket. The winner said he had won a little money from lottery tickets his daughter bought for Father's Day. When he cashed it in, he decided to go for the “Money” tickets, which led to a surprise of a lifetime.

“I saw a $1,000 prize and thought ‘Cool!’ and handed the ticket to my daughter to finish scratching. She yelled, ‘Dad, we got $50,000!’” he told Missouri Lottery. “It just kept growing from there!”

The winning ticket was won at Discount Smokes & Liquor, 17 E. U.S. Highway 69, in Kansas City’s Northland.

Missouri Lottery is required to withhold a 4% state tax on prizes of $600.01 or more, as well as a 24% federal tax for prizes of more than $5,000. Depending on their personal income, winners may owe additional taxes.

According to Missouri Lottery, retailers that sell winning Scratcher and Draw Games tickets receive a bonus that equals 2% of the prize up to $600 by meeting certain game and sales criteria.

In the 2025 fiscal year, Clay County players won more than $39.3 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, while retailers received over $2.9 million in commissions and bonuses.
