Kansas City nightlife isn’t ‘boring.’ You just have to go about it a certain way

Is Kansas City’s nightlife scene trash, or do you just not know how to go about it?

When visitors come through to Kansas City during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, many of them are going to wonder how KC gets down as far as nightlife goes. What are the hottest clubs? Where does everyone go at night? Which places stay open the latest?

The thing is, you shouldn’t get your hopes too high when it comes to KC’s nighttime activities.

Kansas City is not Houston, Atlanta or Las Vegas. Those are some of the biggest party cities in the country and have greater populations than KC. That doesn’t mean the nightlife is boring; you just gotta go about it a certain way.

Take it from someone who is always creating the fun in the city. On your weekday mornings, Shae Perry, who is professionally known as Deona Hustle, is the cohost of the “Hustle and Shyne in The Morning” radio show on Hot 103 Jamz. When she’s not discussing the latest topics surrounding Kansas City culture, you can catch her DJing at events across the area.

On her show, she previously said that KC is more of a bar-hopping city, rather than a club city. She said that this is a city where people settle down and have families, and that it doesn’t have to be a premier city for nightlife.

She still agrees with her take, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do when you get here.

“There are events happening in Kansas City all over the place, on a weekly daily basis. Sometimes people only see what’s in the proximity to them,” Perry said. “So if it’s not the DJs they know, or two of their friends they know, they feel like nothing’s happening here. There’s stuff that’s happening, It just depends on if you want to go there.”

And that’s the key word for Kansas City’s nightlife: events. There are only so many nightclubs that people can go to in the city, such as Aura and Lotus nightclubs in Westport. But the places where Kansas Citians really go to party are at curated events, which often feature a DJ and are usually hosted at an establishment with a bar.

There also comes another question: Can Kansas City even handle trying to party like these bigger cities? Some cities like Las Vegas and Miami have bars and clubs that operate for an entire day. Considering that KC is allowing bars to open until 5 a.m. during the World Cup, this could be a test to see if KC’s nightlife can hang with the big dogs.

“Are we built to stay up once every blue moon till 5-6 a.m.?” Perry said. “If we respond well, then maybe we do lean on those bigger cities, like, a, Dallas, Chicago, and maybe we can have a culture built around more places that stay open till 5-6 a.m.,”

“I think that’s really going to be a test of time, how all those things are changing, with the policies and bars staying open. I think that’d be fun to see how we react to that, that big shift, because that’s not the everyday life here in Kansas City,” Perry said.

This isn’t a town where the city doesn’t sleep and the clubs are always booming. It’s simply not built like that. But if you open your nightlife aspirations to beyond clubs and bars, you can still find yourself having a good time.

Events make up for KC’s lack of clubs

Tez Carter is one of the most popular event hosts in Kansas City. Last year, he won the Kansas City People’s Choice Award for best promoter. His events, which usually cater to those 30+ and are typically day parties, have gotten so big that he’s able to host day parties in Oklahoma City and Dallas, too.

But his journey to being one of the city’s biggest promoter started because he almost felt like he had to. It started back in 2021 when the outside world was opening back up from the COVID-19 pandemic. Carter is from Wyandotte County, and noticed that many people were jumping over to the Missouri side to party.

He not only wanted to instill some form of nightlife in KCK, but he also wanted to create a safe space for folks, because he noted many nightlife spaces in KCMO were dealing with violence. His events had gotten so popular that he eventually extended to Johnson County and now other states.

“When we get together in Kansas City, you will feel like you’re out of town. You will also feel like you’re with family out of town,” Carter said. “We feel like a community. I love the part where everybody’s happy, everybody’s forgetting about their problems and their issues, and just focusing on having a good time.”

Ironically, outside his own events, Carter doesn’t go out like that. When he does, he likes places Verdigris Bar in Leawood, as well as In Good Company KC. He also said a place people like to go to is Kansas City Juke House in 18th & Vine on the weekends.

How can you find events in KC?

Social media will likely be your best friend when you’re looking for nightlife events in Kansas City. But don’t just look for what to do, look for the people who are curating them.

Jamel Thompson, known to his fans as The Royal Chief, is a popular rapper and DJ in Kansas City. He curates events in the area throughout the year, including his monthly “On Wax” series where he hosts parties with other local DJs.

He recommends people to do some research to find curators like himself in the area, but to also be open to trying new events, as you never know what you’ll discover when you’re out here.

“I think people got to get more open to just trying things, or just going somewhere they haven’t gone, whether they with some people or not,” he said. “Just go pop up somewhere, have a drink somewhere, and you never would what you’ll run into, or what the night turns into.”

Some places he recommends for folks going out in KC includes the Percheron rooftop bar at the Crossroads Hotel. He also suggests In Good Company KC, In The Lowest Ferns and Monarch.

Carter recommends people check out the “KC Where You At???” Facebook group, which promotes any type of event you could think of happening in the metro.

Is summer even the best time to be in KC?

There are events happening throughout the year in Kansas City, from First Fridays in the summer to the holiday lights in the winter. You would think that typically the summer would be a prime time to be in the city, considering the warmer weather and summer activities.

However, you can make an argument that the city thrives the most when its sports teams are thriving. Perry has seen how the city gets when teams like the Royals and the Chiefs are winning, and believes it’s an example of how when the vibes are high with the sports teams, everything else is booming.

“Before I was DJing, the nightlife was so much more fun when the Chiefs were winning. Everyone was like, ‘oh, we outside’ every single Sunday,” Perry said. “People was putting PTO in for Mondays because they weren’t gonna make it. When the sports is booming, it’s a driver.”

We’ve seen this firsthand this past NFL season, when the Chiefs missed the postseason for the first time since 2014. Multiple bars across the city told The Star that many fans had tapped out amidst the teams 6-11 season.

However, don’t sleep on a Kansas City summer. Carter agrees that everyone is outside during Chiefs season, but you can always find something to do in KC during the summer.

“Everybody is just everywhere. You can go down to Westport anytime of the week, anytime of the day and see something popping,” he said. “18th & Vine, you can see things popping at nighttime as well. Power and Light, things are popping at nighttime as well. Everybody wants to be outside.”

The next time you hear someone say “Kansas City is boring,” or that the “nightlife sucks here,” there’s a chance they just don’t know how things go around here. It’s a small enough town to where there aren’t a wide range of clubs, but big enough to where you can find something to do almost all the time.

“Just be open to new experiences, be willing to do something you've never done before. Go somewhere you've never gone before, and you might end up finding one of your favorite things in life,” Thompson said.
