KCK police officer shoots man armed with knives during mental health call: KBI
A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer shot a man while responding overnight to a call about a mental health crisis, investigators said.
Officers responded to a call around 10:33 p.m. Monday in the 3400 block of Bell Crossing Drive reporting that a man was in a crisis and armed with a knife, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Upon arrival, officers saw the man on the roof of the residence holding a knife. Police were initially able to deescalate the situation — the man put down the knife and climbed off the roof.
Then another call came in from the same residence just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, reporting that the man was in a crisis again. While responding to that call, another caller reported the man had broken into the basement of the home.
The man was identified by the KBI as 32-year-old Jorge Arellano of Kansas City, Kansas.
At the scene, officers ordered Arellano to exit the residence. Investigators say he then climbed onto the roof of the home armed with multiple knives.
Arellano allegedly made throwing motions with a knife in his hand in the direction of officers and family members. At that time, one KCK officer discharged their firearm, striking Arellano one time, according to the KBI.
Medical aid was rendered at the scene and Arellano was transported to a hospital with injuries that police initially believe to be not life-threatening.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
The KBI often investigates law enforcement use of force cases in Kansas. Information released about Tuesday’s shooting is preliminary and an investigation is ongoing, the agency said.
Once the investigation is complete, the KBI will submit its findings to the Wyandotte County District Attorney for review, it said.
