Argument in KC neighborhood leads to shooting; 1 dead, 1 injured, police say
One man was killed and another was seriously injured in a shooting near the intersection of Askew Avenue and East 12th Street in Kansas City’s Lykins neighborhood Monday evening, police said.
Police were called to a reported shooting in an apartment near Askew and 12th around 6:45 p.m., Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email. A man who matched the description of the suspect in the shooting was taken into custody outside the residence as officers arrived, she said.
Police said officers found a man in a bedroom suffering from life-threatening gunshot trauma and another man who was unresponsive and also suffering from a gunshot wound. One of the men was declared dead at the scene and the other was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Police said their investigation indicated an argument escalated to gunfire.
The killing is Kansas City’s 52nd homicide so far this year, according to The Star’s homicide database. At this point in 2025, Kansas City had recorded 68 homicides.
