1 dies in possible DUI crash near Kansas City’s Loose Park, police say

One person is dead after a crash Sunday near Loose Park that also injured five others. The driver of the other vehicle involved is suspected of driving under the influence.

Kansas City police say the crash occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday at 51st Street and Wornall Road in the South Plaza area, according to a press release from Sgt. Phillip DiMartino.

A preliminary investigation has so far determined that a Toyota sedan traveling east on 51st Street failed to stop at a red light, DiMartino said. A Ford Explorer traveling north was speeding and crashed into the Toyota, according to the release.

Two adults and four juveniles were taken to area hospitals, and the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead.

DiMartino said the driver of the Ford Explorer is under investigation for potentially driving under the influence.
