Girl critically injured after crash with KCPD patrol car on Armour Boulevard
A juvenile is hospitalized with critical injuries after a collision with a Kansas City Police Department vehicle on Saturday morning, a police spokeswoman said.
Officers responded around 5:30 a.m. to East Armour Boulevard and Tracy Avenue for a reported crash involving a KCPD patrol vehicle.
A preliminary investigation indicates the crash happened as a marked KCPD patrol vehicle was driving east on Armour Boulevard without its lights or sirens activated, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a police spokeswoman.
Just east of Tracy Ave., a girl ran into the road from between two parked vehicles and in front of the patrol vehicle, according to a crash log. The right front side of the KCPD vehicle then hit the girl, knocking her to the ground, Gonzalez said in an email.
The girl was transported to a hospital with critical injuries. Just before noon Saturday, the girl was receiving treatment and remained in serious condition, Gonzalez said.
Since the investigation is ongoing, police have released few details about the girl who was hit. It’s unclear whether the girl was alone or with other people at the time of the crash, or if she lived nearby.
Police have not provided an age of the victim. While an age is sometimes provided, police departments do not typically release the identities of juveniles or victims from non-fatal crashes.
The two officers who were in the patrol car at the time of the crash were not injured, the crash log said.
In an email Saturday afternoon, Gonzalez said the girl may not have been visible to the officers as she ran out from between the two parked vehicles.
While the KCPD vehicle did not have its lights or sirens activated, it’s unclear whether the officers were responding to a call at the time of the crash.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
