Driver leaves scene, returns after fatal crash that killed pedestrian on KC’s East Side

One person is dead after being struck by a sport-utility vehicle early Friday on Kansas City’s East Side, a police spokesperson said.

The crash occurred about 12:50 a.m. Friday near the intersection of East Winner Road and Booth Avenue in Kansas City’s North Blue Ridge neighborhood, Sgt. Phil DiMartino of the Kansas City Police Department said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian was attempting to cross Winner Road from north to south and was in the right lane of the westbound lanes. A westbound gray Chevrolet Trax struck the pedestrian, DiMartino said.

The driver of the Chevrolet initially left the scene but returned and contacted officers. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

The pedestrian’s death is the city’s 19th traffic fatality this year, compared with 15 at this time last year. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
