Man and woman in custody after shootout, lengthy police chase in Basehor: KBI
A man and a woman are in custody after they allegedly exchanged gunfire with Leavenworth County sheriff’s deputies and led law enforcement on a lengthy vehicle chase Friday, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Deputies responded around 8:45 p.m. to the 16900 block of Dempsey Road in Basehor, Kansas, where a resident reported being threatened, according to a news release.
The resident provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle, a white Honda SUV. Deputies located the Honda nearby and tried to conduct a traffic stop, the KBI said in a release, but the driver refused to stop and fled officers.
While the Honda traveled east in the 17000 block of Dempsey Road, gunshots were fired from the Honda to the patrol car in pursuit, the KBI said. Near North 147th and Parallel Road, gunshots were fired again from the Honda, and the deputy responding wrecked his patrol vehicle.
The Honda eventually collided with a passenger car on Parallel Road, according to the news release. A man then ran from the Honda and once again fired several shots toward a deputy, the KBI said. A deputy then returned fire.
The man, identified by the KBI as Andrew M. Amundsen, 33, of Leavenworth, fled the crash scene on foot, the news release said. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Mariah Huggins, 29, of Kansas City, Kansas, was taken into custody at the crash site.
Amundsen allegedly broke the window of a nearby home and entered the residence, then exited and continued to flee, the KBI said.
Sheriff’s deputies eventually located Amundsen hiding in a truck bed in the area of N. 157th and Cedar Street, and took him into custody, according to the news release.
Amundsen was uninjured during the gunfire exchange, the KBI said. He was booked into the Leavenworth County Jail on an outstanding arrest warrant.
The deputy who crashed his patrol vehicle was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries from the wreck and has since been released, the KBI said.
“No other deputies or civilians were hurt during this incident,” the KBI said in a news release. “As a precaution, Huggins was examined by hospital personnel, and then booked into the Leavenworth County Jail on a pre-existing warrant.”
The KBI said that additional charges are expected to be filed against Amundsen and Huggins.
The Basehor Police Department assisted investigating the scene before the KBI was requested. In Kansas, the KBI is typically called on to investigate officer-involved shootings.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Case findings will be presented to the Leavenworth County prosecutors for any applicable charges, the KBI said.
