Man injured in Kansas City police shooting after allegedly firing gun into air

A man was critically injured during a confrontation Sunday afternoon after police say he had fired a gun into the air and was shot by an officer in Kansas City’s Northeast area, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The shooting occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of Independence Avenue, the highway patrol said in a news release. No officers were injured.

According to a preliminary investigation, dispatchers sent officers to investigate a reported disturbance involving a man who was allegedly firing a gun into the air, the highway patrol said.

After police arrived, one officer used a Taser while another officer shot the man, critically injuring him, the highway patrol said. He was taken to a hospital.

Further details about what led up to the shooting, including whether the man was still firing shots into the air by the time police arrived and how many times the man was struck, by gunfire were not available. A handgun was found at the scene, according to the highway patrol.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Police Department is investigating other possible charges related to the disturbance.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
