Fatal crash on Independence highway leaves pedestrian dead, police say

A pedestrian was killed in an overnight crash on a highway in Independence, police said.

Officers responded to a reported crash around 2:44 a.m. Wednesday on Missouri 78 Highway, west of Missouri 7 Highway, according to a news release.

Preliminary information from police shows that the crash happened as a pedestrian walked in the eastbound lanes of Missouri 78 Highway. A 2018 Ford Fusion driving east on the highway struck the pedestrian, according to a news release.

Paramedics transported the pedestrian to a hospital, where they later died from their injuries.

Police have not yet publicly identified the person who was killed as they notify the next of kin. The person’s age and gender have not yet been made available.

The driver of the Ford remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
