Jackson County jail inmate dies in hospital, death under investigation

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at the Jackson County Detention Center.

The Kansas City Fire Department was called to the Jackson County Detention Center, at 1300 Cherry St., Sunday on reports of a medical emergency, according to a press release from Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Ronda Montgomery.

A 44-year-old inmate was transported to an area hospital where he died Tuesday, Montgomery said. The inmate’s name has not been released pending notification of his next of kin. However, officials revealed that the man was from Independence.

A preliminary investigation did not indicate a physical interaction between the man and jail staff, Montgomery said. However, detectives are “currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.”

The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine the man’s official cause of death, Montgomery said.
