A little girl in Kansas City has died, after being hit while riding her bike in south Kansas City Tuesday.

Several police departments were called to the area of Longview Road and Food Lane around 7:20 a.m. to a critical injury crash, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

A white Ford Transit van was traveling north on Food Lane and turning west on Longview Road at the intersection. At the same time, a girl under the age of 10 was riding her bike within a marked crosswalk on a green signal. The van struck the girl, causing her to fall on the road, according to Becchina.

The girl was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police are still working to identify her.

This marks the 53rd traffic fatality this year, according to data tracked by the police department. The investigation is ongoing.
