Man hit by SUV in overnight Independence crash dies at hospital

A pedestrian died at a hospital after he was hit by an SUV in Independence early Saturday morning, police said in a news release.

Officers responded around 4:36 a.m. to the intersection of South Emery Street and East 23rd Street South on a reported crash.

According to preliminary information from police, the crash happened as a man was walking in the eastbound lanes of E. 23rd Street. A Nissan Pathfinder driving on E. 23rd Street struck him at the intersection of South Emery Street.

Paramedics transported the man to a hospital where he later died, police said in a news release.

Police on Monday Identified the man as 47-year-old Jayson Simpson of Independence.

The driver of the Nissan stayed at the scene of the crash and cooperated with investigators, police said.

The eastbound lanes of E. 23rd Street between South Emery Street and Leslie Avenue were closed for approximately three hours Saturday morning as crews cleared the wreck.

An investigation into what led to the crash is ongoing.
